Metallic beads on your braids add to that exact same factor. The gold metallic feel will make you stand out, and if you want to be that person, this hairstyle is perfect for you. This short Asian hairstyle is perfect for a fun night out or party, where you can funk it up. This hairstyle is a little less on the clean and sleek side and more towards the fun undone side.
Short Viking Braids for Men
If you have around 3 inches of hair, you can go for this thick braids X short hairstyle. With short hair, you may even go for a beautiful design with artsy flower braids like this one. This hairstyle can help you to take the aesthetic appearance of your hair to the next level. If you are curious to try a man bun with braids, you may try this braid hairstyle.
#40: Men Braids with Fade Hairstyle
From faded haircut to mohawk, plus a stitched braid on top will create a simple yet so neat hairstyle on your cool punk looks. This braided hairstyle can be achieved in long and short hair. In this hairstyle, long braids are pulled back and styled in as many as you want. Box braids are another classic type of men’s braids and always look great, whoever is wearing them. Box braids are plaits that are divided into sections with each section having four corners.
A Quick History of Braided Hair for Men
Faded man bun braids can be done fast because there’s much less hair to work with. The mohawk braid is one of the edgier styles on this list. This style is formed by shaving both sides of the head low and braiding the remaining hair in the middle into a large, voluminous braid. Mohawk braids are a bold look and are akin to hairstyles worn by warriors in the distant past. Do you love the look of viking braids but always thought they can only be made on long hair?
Trimmed Haircut with Corn Row Braids
These bun braids for curly hair feature a bald fade undercut with a braided top knot/bun. If you want an undercut, make sure your hair is long enough to push back and/or be able to put in a bun. Thicker or coarse hair on top works best for it to be braided. But nowadays, so many men are doing french braids in different designs and a great style to add to your faded hairstyle.
Regardless of the skin tone you have, you may think about going for a hairstyle like this one. Besides, if you braid your hair, you risk worsening things. Tight braids styled to remain for a few months can damage the hair root and cause hair damage and loss. When you get rid of the braids, you will get undesirable bristle-like hair.

A box fade, popularly called a temp fade hairstyle, can have a huge effect on your hairstyle. The braids in this haircut play an essential role in enhancing dimension to the whole haircut by creating a contour at the hairline. Besides, the hairstyle is even made to look more sophisticated and stylish by the cornrows that are meticulously designed on the top. The longer your locks, the better your duo braids will appear.
How To Take Care Of Men’s Braids?
Short braids for men usually take just minutes or very few hours to make. Making these involves using the two-strand technique and simply twisting the two individual strands of hair together. Twists for men are usually made in medium and jumbo sizes to maintain a masculine look, which means they don’t take long to make or take out.
These male braids and twists are one way of rocking the famous man bun. You can start with these edgy twists, then put all those locks into a high knot for a trendy look. Perfect for any hair texture as long as there is some length to it. Big box braids on gents have gained a vast amount of popularity lately. Suggesting clean, even parts with several braids is vital. Maintenance around man braids with a skin taper and sharp hairline will tie everything together.
The uniqueness is in the designed that is done at the back of the head. When short hair is braided, part of the scalp is exposed to the naked eye. This type of braid hairstyle includes the basic cornrows but the added uniqueness is in the top knot. Many men prefer ending their braids in a man bun but if the hair length is not sufficient, and then a top knot would be the perfect alternative.
And the best aspect of this style is that you don’t need to have long hair to pull it off. With locs, you can get a plethora of styles from them thanks to their versatility. For example, you can easily braid your locs to get an amazing braided locks hairstyle, sure to steal the show.

Maybe you’re stuck in a style rut and just need to see yourself with a few unexpected style options to get inspired to make a change. Maybe you’re planning your wedding, birthday party, or a special event that calls for a new hairstyle and you want to see a few different looks before you make your decision. Maybe you tend to opt for sleek, straight styles but are thinking about shaking things up with a messy-wavy style or something a little more voluminous. Making changes – big or small – to your hair can be scary when you’re not sure how it’s going to look on you.
The best types of hair extensions can instantly add volume, body, and length to your natural look. There are four main types of hair extensions—bonded, weaves, tape-ins, and clip-ins—and most are available in natural hair, synthetic fiber hair, or a mix of both. If the highest-quality option is what you're after, look for a brand that uses Remy hair—aka human hair that has its cuticles intact and has never been dyed or processed in any way. Now you’re probably wondering – how do halo extensions stay in?
Shop My Hidden Crown Hair Extensions
Since I knew I wanted the halo design (no fussing with clips or glue), the next step was choosing my color and desired length. The fishing line is adjustable, so I pulled it until the hair laid just where I wanted it and trimmed the excess wire. Once on my head, I styled it as I normally would with a curling iron section by section.
Halo® Extensions
If you've heard Glam Seamless mentioned in the same breath as Bellami, that's because the brand offers comparable quality at a more affordable price. Crown hair extensions turn any client’s hair into their crowning glory. Add insta-hair with a whole extension piece that rests on the client’s head (literally, a crown!). Super fast to install and super fast to remove, yet oh so versatile, too.

No matter if you're in Eagle Rock or Valley Glen, you're likely not too far from a recommended hair place. Los Angeles is looking good for your next hair, nails and health fix. There are roughly 60 hair businesses in the Los Angeles area, so we're sure you'll be feeling fine in no time. Crown Hair Extensions
If you fit the wire correctly, your Hidden Crown hair extensions will not fall off or slide around. I’ve worn these pretty much everywhere including NYFW in February when I was running around from show to show and it was super windy outside. Although it’s super secure, I don’t recommend doing flips or head banging or anything like that lol! I also did also wear one to Disneyland… but I wouldn’t wear it to Magic Mountain. Years ago, I shared my nightmare permanent hair extension experience, which lead me to trying out a halo extension as my hair grew back. I had previously never tried a halo and didn’t even really know what it was!
Whether you are experiencing hair loss, hair thinning at the crown, Alopecia, menopause hair loss or just are looking for more and/or longer hair. Our rooted Crown Topper® has ¼ inch of darker rooting put in to emulate a more grown out, natural look. I use this L’Oreal Root Spray (in shade Dark Blonde) to give them a more rooted look and to help it blend better with my roots.
Another great ponytail option is this pick from Remy New York. Although it only has black and brunette color options, it comes in eight lengths—from 10 inches to 24 inches. This brand only sells 100 percent virgin Remy human hair, meaning it hasn't been dyed or processed in any way. Their mission is to sell hair that's been ethically sourced worldwide, as well as paying fair wages for their workers—so you can trust that this hair is going to a good cause.
COMPARE METHODS
As Okougbo notes, Hidden Crown extensions come in handy for a range of hair disasters (aside from a bad cut). "You can hide split ends, or lengthen a blunt cut," she says. "Another use of the Crown Extension is to add dimension or color to your hair, without the damage of bleaching and dye." Styling products are discouraged from being used directly on the extensions, though I've found that they hold a curl incredibly well, so I don't even need to use hairspray.

Another industry favorite, Hotheads is beloved for its long-lasting extensions—they're fast and easy to install, don't damage your hair, and are easy to maintain. Available in more than 40 colors, they're a great option if you want to add major length. Taking care of your extensions is extremely important, especially if you want them to last. The process of washing them was a bit foreign to me at first because I didn’t want to ruin them but they have a great tutorial on their website that I followed. They recommend washing only when necessary – about every 2-4 months on average. I usually wash every 5-6 months since I don’t wear them everyday and I have multiple extensions but it really just depends on the circumstances.
Dressing up your natural hair with extensions is fun, but the industry has a history of unethical harvesting. Great Lengths is beloved by consumers who want to know where and from whom their natural hair extensions are sourced. The brand buys its Remy raw hair from Indian temples, which receive it through voluntary donations and use the proceeds to support local charities. Each set of extensions comes from one person to ensure a consistent look and texture and is bundled in Italy. While the general rule with hair extensions is that you get what you pay for, you can find affordable options that are good quality.
The shop is located the heart of Los Angeles and they specialize in wedding hair extensions for brides and their bridal party. Also, if you need your extension taken out, Celebrity Extensions staff are experts in hair extensions removal. Visit their site or walk in today to make your appointment.
When wearing a tube or tank top dress, long, thick locks often look best. Thanks to extensions we can wear whatever outfit we choose without destroying our closets. Here are a few of the top places to get hair extensions in Los Angeles.
I’ve gone to NYFW in the heat and the cold, Puerto Vallarta in the summer, and Disneyland. I use the storage bag when I travel so they don’t get matted. If it’s windy, I recommend having a hair tie to use so they don’t get tangled.
One piece of hair that will be even around your entire head and you can take it on or off in 30 seconds. The wire and micro bead work as a pulley system that adjust to all head sizes. First, pull on the excess wire with force to slide it through the microbead.
Best for Natural Hair
For a rainy day, I recommend having an umbrella handy or wearing a hooded jacket. If it’s humid, I recommend getting creative with your styling by doing braids or something else where you can pull the hair back. Women love their hair, and different hairstyles compliment certain outfits.
COMPARE METHODS
Admittedly, even after over two months without washing them, mine remained fresh as a daisy. I didn't wear them every day, though, so I'm sure if they saw more daylight, I'd have given them a rinse. When you do clean them, it's recommended to use a sulfate-free shampoo and a hydrating conditioner, and then hang them dry or lay them flat on a towel. With 1 billion wellness appointments already booked, we're industry leaders in beauty and wellness. And Fresha's free hair salon booking system is getting glowing reviews from the 450,000 business owners, professionals and stylists who are already using it, too. So when you book an hair appointment in Los Angeles, United States, you can trust that Fresha will have done all the fiddly bits, so you don't have to.
Virtual Color Match
"The Crown extension is a great, damage-free fix for a bad haircut," says Jasmine Okougbo, executive manager at Hidden Crown. "You can instantly add length, volume, or both within seconds." For full-on glam ponytail styles—think Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande—you need these synthetic extensions. Choose from loose or spiral waves, braided, layered curls, kinky curls, and straight options for every kind of updo. We love that they're available in extra-long lengths up to 34 inches and fun colors like powder blue. They're also easy to use with no learning curve if you're new to hair extensions.
HIDDEN CROWN LAYERS – 22 INCH
Kinkistry takes the guesswork out of matching the texture of extensions to your natural curl pattern. The Black-owned brand offers weft hair wigs, clip-ins, and ponytails ranging in curl patterns from 2b to 4c. Also, they're all 100 percent virgin hair—if you take good care of them, you'll be amazed at how long it lasts.
All in all, the styling process took about 10 to 15 minutes. When I took a final look in the mirror, I instantly felt a huge jolt of confidence—like I was myself again. Please be aware that other brands may advertise a similar extension but if it has clips on it then it is not a true halo®. The design allows the gravity of your own hair pulled over the top of the invisible wire to hold it securely in place.
Hidden Crown extensions are made of 100 percent Remy human hair (the highest-grade human hair on the market) that comes on one large track with a fishing line–type wire that circles around the top. The invisible wire means you can add length and thickness without the addition of glue, tape, or stitching. The ease of use makes them a solid choice for those looking to transform a sad 'do.
Quickly compare prices and reviews for hair salons, then book your appointment safely and securely online. Clip-in extensions are a great option if you're looking for temporary length and fullness, but securing them can be tricky and uncomfortable. The innovative clip-ins from Cashmere Hair are easy to install, and they have a silicone-adhesive base, so you don't have to tease your roots first—eliminating the risk of damage to your own strands.

“The hair is high-quality, natural, unprocessed human hair,” Ramirez affirms. With wigs, clips, bulk, and wefted hair options, you can find the style, shade, and texture that suits you best. If you’re not convinced, go in and touch the hair for yourself—the brand has brick-and-mortar locations across the country.

Made of Remy human hair, these clip-in extensions come in expertly mixed shades that blend different undertones to mimic what natural hair looks like in sunlight. The result is natural-looking extensions that blend with your own hair and never look too monochromatic, which can look fake. Along with 12- and 18-inch options, they also come in super cute top knot and ponytail options.
Once fitted properly, use the provided needle nose pliers to tightly clamp the microbead shut. This is the most accurate comparison for how your extensions will blend with your natural hair. The cost depends on the type of hair extensions you choose, but you should expect to pay between $50 and $500.
When it comes to extensions and thickening services our knowledgeable team is highly experienced in customizing solutions and achieving the look of your dreams. Both the original Crown Topper® and the Mini Toppers should be clipped in about 1-2 inches behind your hairline. We do recommend teasing the hair at the root to allow the clips to fit snug to the hair and feel secure. The Crown Topper® is designed to provide full coverage of the crown area. When I walked through my apartment door, my boyfriend could read the immense regret all over my face.
Flanagan, along with fellow series writers Emmy Grinwis, Justina Ireland, Mat Johnson, Dani Parker, Rebecca Klingel, James Flanagan, and Kiele Sanchez, falls into a cyclical episodic format that delves into each Usher child and subsequent death. While that may rob the overarching story of suspense, the series writers compensate for that through inventive, gnarly extended deaths and a befitting macabre sense of humor that lets the cast vamp it up in exciting ways. After four series for Netflix, including The Haunting Of Hill House and Midnight Mass, Flanagan has really found his confident groove. He’s as adept as ever at creating a spooky mood, but his storytelling is defter than it’s been before. Past projects have had a bit of sentimentality about them, but Usher doesn’t allow itself huggy endings or nice guys to root for.
What's your favorite Mike Flanagan project?
Roderick’s dementia means his narration is frequently interrupted by sudden (and effectively spooky) hallucinations of his deceased progeny—melted by toxic waste, stabbed through the heart, or mauled by chimpanzees. Given the ultra-rich family and Big Pharma context, one assumes that Flanagan was taking notes on Succession and Dopesick. Fortunato is the manufacturer of Ligadone, a fictional painkiller that has caused an opioid epidemic, prompting a lawsuit leveled by D.A.
The Netflix Limited Series Has Eight Episodes
It is only because of Isla that they survive; every aspect of their lives – from medicine to food – relies on her. Has appeared on PBS series' Monstrum, served on the SXSW Midnighter shorts jury, and moderated horror panels for WonderCon and SeriesFest. As we open, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood), head of a multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical empire, is burying the last of his six adult children.
Vince McMahon Lists Final TKO Shares for Sale
But in its wish-fulfillment approach to a very real tragedy, the haunting here is more fleeting and less marrow-deep than Flanagan’s best work. Even if you’re a total Poe dilettante, The Fall of the House of Usher offers pieces that’ll make you say, “I get that one! ” If you’re more of an intermediate Poe reader, you’ll be able to say, “I see where this is going! I’m guessing you’ll find the series cute in its eagerness, at least for a while. Trucco’s character is Rufus Griswold, a name shared with the 19th century scribe whose reflections on Poe after the latter’s death helped shape our possibly incorrect perception of the author as an opioid-addicted madman, which adds a layer of irony to Flanagan’s Sackler-esque prism. Flanagan also told The Wrap how The Haunting TV shows are different from The Fall of the House of Usher and why it’s not a third Haunting series.
Mike Flanagan Brings the House Down
His oeuvre to this point has prioritized the meaning of what scares us rather than the act of being scared, but Usher proves he isn’t unmotivated by fear or uninterested in gore — he’s just choosy with his victims. It’s a rare thing for Mike Flanagan to deny his characters sympathy, and rarer still for the horror auteur to delight in their suffering. But in the characteristically dense and moody — and uncharacteristically grisly and furious — The Fall of the House of Usher, Flanagan invites us to do both. Gone is the solace extended to hurting families and lovers in The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor; gone is the belief in togetherness and compassion that girded Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club. In their place, The Fall of the House of Usher serves up contempt for the wealthy, disgust with their selfishness, and glee at their increasingly gnarly demises, and that unexpected-for-Flanagan feast is bloody delicious. While you can mostly see where things are headed in a broad sense, House of Usher excels at the details, from the thematically fitting way that characters are killed to the truth behind Roderick’s deadly deal.
Lori Loughlin Speaks Out Following Varsity Blues Scandal: “You Can’t Hang on to Negativity. Life’s Too Short”
But the show drowns in its uneven grasp of the source material, when it needn’t have relied on source material at all. The key to the ideal Flanagan series likely lies not with more cherry-picked adaptations, but with more stories that are entirely Flanagan’s own. Each captures the chaotic conflict of a tortured violent psyche, and each works because the show takes the time to establish their characters and then lets us see their gradual mental collapse and demise. The first win belongs to T’Nia Miller as Victorine, the heart research scientist whose pursuit of a miracle medical technology drives her into complete psychosis. When it does, the result is a wondrously bloody, pitch-perfect display of the macabre.
The catharsis the series offers is instead to its viewers, through a satire that rains catastrophe on the seemingly untouchable, and fully deserving; mercy only goes in one direction this time. With Usher, Flanagan loudly slams the door on his Netflix era, but also leaves behind a tell-tale heart that beats as irrepressibly for humanity as it does for horror. Because of this, it starts out slowly as the show attempts to introduce all of its various parts. There were some great moments — particularly when you learn the horrific ways that characters die — but it wasn’t clear how those different pieces fit together. Part of the problem is that there’s just a lot here; characters were being killed off before I even had a real sense of who they were and how they fit into the family. But after some time (for me, it was the fourth episode when things clicked), the scope of the show comes into focus and really hits its groove.
What makes this House of Usher decidedly not an anthology is the way that the writers intricately weave the main players’ stories throughout each episode. Flanagan has form with making tributes to some of horror’s most beloved oeuvres. He took on Shirley Jackson in The Haunting of Hill House (which was fabulous), Henry James in The Haunting of Bly Manor (spooky but saccharine) and Christopher Pike in The Midnight Club (meh). Thankfully, Flanagan and Poe’s sensibilities prove a winning pairing, staying on the edge of terror without cascading into jump scares and sentimentality. Guilt permeates every frame of Flanagan’s Poe universe, and buys into not so much the horror as the terror. Whatever level you’re at, it’s a formula for a series of moment-to-moment effectiveness, with some cleverness and much playful horror.

Roderick has come from a miserable childhood with a puritanical, sickly mother who believes that “pain and suffering are the kiss of Jesus”. As a parent himself, Roderick doesn’t fare much better, having six children by five different women who range from obnoxious hedonists (Napoleon and Prospero Usher) to despicable creeps (Frederick, Tamerlane and Victoria) to obnoxious, despicable hedonist creeps (Camille). The family is made up of Flanagan’s regular ensemble of actors, and to buy them as relatives requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but for Flanagan fans, there’s great fun to be had seeing how these favourites fit into his new tale of terror. Ruth Codd (the highlight of The Midnight Club) plays Roderick’s much younger wife Juno, a former heroin addict whose life was turned around thanks to the drugs the Ushers peddle, while Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas and Kate Siegel each take on a dastardly member of the Usher brood. Alongside his favoured players is Mark Hamill as an unfeeling lawyer/fixer for the Usher family who sounds as if he gargles a pint of nails every morning. But as we know from the start, there’s no point in getting overly attached to them, as grisly fates are assured for all.
It’s important that Roderick and Madeline are cruel, selfish creatures—less so how they got that way. What’s more interesting is to watch how the fallout of their decisions fell on Roderick’s many children, all torn apart by some of Poe’s most memorable creations. It turns out that almost every branch of the Usher family tree has been cut by violent horror. ” “No, not before,” he replies in one of the show’s many glimpses of Flanagan’s viciously dark sense of humor. (Poe had one too.) Roderick has been haunted by all his awful children who have shuffled off this mortal coil, and it’s because it feels like the ghosts are finally coming for him that he is ready to confess. He’s having visions of monstrous ghosts, including the recurring specter of Verna (Carla Gugino), a figure that connects most of these tall tales as a sort of vengeful force of karma, the devil come to take what she’s due from a man who profited off the pain of others.
In the same article, Flanagan confirms that supernatural elements will be at play in this story. Poe has quite a hefty body of work that includes many short stories, poems, essays, and a novel. The Black Cat, The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, The Tell-Tale Heart, Lenore, and Annabel Lee are among Edgar Allan Poe’s most well-known stories. Flanagan and team will have a lot of potential material with Poe’s large body of work, even if they just focus on his most popular material.
“The Fall of the House of Usher” feels like Flanagan playing with form and tone in many ways, and it results in a surprisingly funny yet grisly series. Its literary origins don’t always mesh, and those familiar with Poe will realize the destination well ahead of time. It’s offset by a stunning production, numerous horror sequences, and kills that’ll delight the horror fan. It’s also another showcase of magnetic performers making the absolute most of their time on screen.
Actually, they may have been doing something a bit more involved than that, as Madeline tells her brother that they want to make sure the cops don’t follow them. A stunning use of Poe’s work as the Cliffs Notes to his own majestic, intricate brand of storytelling, Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” showcases what the 1% is willing to sacrifice to remain in high places. However, it’s also a reminder that while the powerful may delay settling a tab, debts must often be paid in blood when collection time comes — whether in one generation or the next.
The Fall Of The House Of Usher review: The guy who does horror with heart takes on the heartless
Mike Flanagan has been one of Netflix’s most dependable showrunners, expertly crafting one horror series after another since The Haunting Of Hill House in 2018. His newest series uses the stories of Edgar Allan Poe to build a tale of a family who built a pharmaceutical powerhouse under somewhat sketchy circumstances, and a patriarch who sees all of his children die in the span of two weeks. Showrunners Flanagan and longtime producing partner Trevor Macy create a narrative structure that follows the Ushers one-by-one to their doom at the hands of the mysterious Verna (Carla Gugino). With the deaths telecast from the outset, the overarching mysteries instead lie within the inciting events that doomed the Usher family in the first place and how the preternatural Verna fits into the equation.

Fans of creator Mike Flanagan know that his entire body of work sits within the horror genre, but this show is more sinister than chilling. As the episodes press forward, an aura of foreboding is infused throughout the scenes. Since the redeemable characters within the series are almost non-existent, watching the demise of the Ushers is nothing to be horrified about, but it is grisly nonetheless. Though the series’ title comes from only a single source, fans will already recognize that this is more of a hodgepodge. There are familiar character names, directly absorbed plotlines, overt and subtle visual nods.
Flanagan weaves them together so that each story feeds into the others, with an ever-changing supernatural figure (Carla Gugino) stalking through them all, testing each child’s morality and finding them wanting. It’s very smartly done, making for a cohesive epic rather than a disconnected anthology. Presenting vintage Poe stories filtered through Mike Flanagan's deliciously dark lens, The Fall of the House of Usher will get a rise out of horror fans. The Fall Of The House Of Usher certainly has the similar dark, foreboding feel of Mike Flanagan’s other Netflix series, like The Haunting Of Hill House and The Haunting Of Bly Manor. In Flanagan's version, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and his twin sister Madeline (Mary McDonnell) are the CEO and COO, respectively, of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, a vast corporate empire that the pair ruthlessly built up over 40 years. The keystone of their business is a wildly popular pain-killing drug called Ligodone, which they claim is safe and non-addictive despite many, many deaths over the years resulting from abuse of the drug.

Like some of Flanagan’s previous work — Hill House is based on a Shirley Jackson novel and Bly Manor a story by Henry James — House of Usher is the kind of adaption that uses the source material as a skeleton to build something entirely new upon. It's not a spoiler to say that all of them are doomed; we learn that much in the first five minutes.
‘The King Tide’: An Island Town Rots with Moral Decay in Canadian Folk Horror Fable [Review]
The narrative shifts away from the motivations and desires of the Usher children, focusing more on Roderick and Madeline as perpetrators of the opioid epidemic. This element of the series was often too on the nose, and much less compelling than the random displays of immorality and wickedness that make the Ushers rotten to the core. Since there are more than a couple of fictional representations of the Saclker family in media, the show would’ve been even stronger had it not leaned so heavily into those story fragments, and remained aligned instead with the “Succession” aspects of the series. Also, the framework of the Usher legacy is most poignant when Flanagan shines a light on the twins’ ambitions, even as teens and young adults, as well as their unbridled loyalty to one another. Broken up into eight chapters, the six middle episodes of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” each named for a terrifying Poe tale, illustrate the death of one of the Usher children.
Flanagan takes a kind of mix-and-match approach to his biggest references that frequently makes their origin stories nearly incidental. For example, the Poe short story “The Black Cat” is originally about a murderous addict who succumbs fully to his violent impulses. But in the House of Usher episode “Black Cat,” that aspect of the focal character is almost entirely absent because we barely spend any time with him before he’s battling his furry demon. Instead, that psychology gets handed to the subject of the “Pit and the Pendulum” episode. As a result, that episode has little in common with its origin source, while “Black Cat” lacks any of the depth and murderous intensity that makes Poe’s story so memorable. Mike Flanagan’s latest Netflix series, The Fall of the House of Usher, a loose adaptation of the Edgar Allan Poe short story, certainly fits in many of the familiar nouns — each episode references one or more familiar Poe works in combinations that can feel like a trip through junior high English class.
The cast is made up of Flanagan regulars who make up for a delightfully despicable group of asshole millionaires. We don’t get an even picture of all the Usher kids in the first episode, but we get enough to satisfy our curiosity. Camille is a publicity shark; Frederick is a bit of a doof whom the rest of the family calls “Frauderick”; Tamerlane is very loyal and hates Roderick’s current wife Juno (Ruth Codd). Even so, we know that they all have their own issues despite what looks like unwavering family loyalty.
The series unfolds as a string of morality tales in which the sins of the father are visited upon the equally corrupt heads of the offspring. Usher answers some of those questions far more satisfyingly than others; its argument against unchecked affluence and corporate monopolization are both clearer than its explanation of Poe, whom it would rather maintain as a specter than analyze as a man. While that degree of social commentary might feel new for Flanagan, it’s not that far removed from how he criticized the misuse of religion as a divisive force in Hill House and Midnight Mass. There’s a giddy fuck-it quality to Usher’s venomous barbs, a sense that Flanagan is taking big swings as he backs out of Netflix’s doors.
After all, hubris, like any of the fine products from the Roderick-run Fortunato, is a hell of a drug. The story explicitly ties the physical House of Usher to the Usher lineage, stating that the peasants in that domain use the phrase “House of Usher” for both. However, the connection between the house and the family runs deeper than linguistic shorthand. The narrator observes the house as having an almost human-like quality, describing its windows as “eye-like.” Just as Roderick appears to radiate his own melancholy, so too does the house have a depressing air.
When Dupin gets to Roderick’s house, the same one he grew up in, the senior Usher tells him that he’s ready to admit to all of it. He means the fraud and other charges that Dupin has brought against him and his company, Fortunado Pharmaceuticals. But he also wants to tell him about who killed all six of his children over the past two weeks. He had his six children — Frederick (Henry Thomas), Camille (Kate Siegel), Napoleon aka “Leo” (Rahul Kohli), Tamerlane (Samantha Sloyan), Victorine (T’Nia Miller) and Prospero (Sauriyan Sapkota) with five different women. But because of the way he was brought up, in a family of exclusion, they’re all welcome, if they keep the family’s secrets in the family. One of the most intriguing components of life is the realization that we all have a tab, and at one point or another, a bill will come due.
The show generally doesn’t look cheap and there are evocative images aplenty, but despite “house” being right there in the title, the domestic locations, however ostensibly opulent, are never memorable. The government has struggled for years to topple the metaphorical house of Usher, led by the crusading C. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly), but thanks to Usher family attorney and general fixer Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill), nothing sticks.
